New Initiative
In January of this year North Shore ConneXions Society started a new initiative called Employment First. This initiative promotes paid employment as the first choice for our self advocates. We have developed our Employment First Philosophy as demonstrated below.
Employment First Philosophy - 2010
It is important to note that key elements to the Employment First philosophy adopted by ConneXions are:
1. Choice
2. Opportunity
3. Options
Our philosophy is not mandated and will be driven by a person centred, self-determination, and collaborative approach. We believe that:
- Employment is the priority option offered prior to any other service
- When someone is of working age they should be given the opportunity to explore work options, build on career planning and engage in work that makes sense to them
- That all individuals, regardless of the nature or extent of their disabilities, should have the opportunity and support to work in the community
- Industry standard wages are a right of every citizen who chooses employment
- Working is fundamental to adulthood, quality of life, individual productivity, self-worth, and earning the means to exercise freedoms and choices available to all citizens
